Hushed whispers echo around the works hanging on plain white walls. Visitors tilt their heads, searching for meaning—trying to understand what they’re seeing.
“You don’t have to understand it—you just have to experience it.”
For Buffalo native Caroline Gerwitz, that idea didn’t come all at once—it revealed itself over time.
Caroline pursued a number of disciplines, but something felt missing. That feeling led her across California, New Jersey, London, Italy, and New York City, where she eventually found art history. Caroline didn’t know what the world had in store for her—from a career in museums to a love for soccer.
Now an Associate in the Executive Offices at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum and an avid member of the Buffalo Spurs supporters group and Buffalo Pro Soccer fan, she feels like things have fallen into place.
“It felt like everything opened up—like this is what I’m supposed to be doing.”
While studying abroad in London, the shift became clear. She couldn’t put down her pencil for her art history work—but struggled to pick it up for anything else.
“Working in museums was an option I hadn’t fathomed.”
She didn’t leave Buffalo expecting to be gone as long as she was, but life moved quickly. Though the galleries feel quiet, the work behind them moves fast—every detail is intentional, every piece is carefully placed.
Graduate studies brought her to New York City, which led to her career in museums. Time spent working at the American Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) illuminated the work that goes into enriching the visitor experience.
“You don’t think about how art gets on the walls—but there’s a whole world behind it.”
Her story doesn’t stop with art.

If museums are filled with whispers and quiet appreciation, soccer lives on the other end of the spectrum—in packed stadiums, crowded bars, and in shared moments of energy. Caroline didn’t grow up playing the game. She discovered it later when colleagues at MoMA would fill the staff lounge to cheer for their country during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
“At first, I just loved the energy.”

What stayed with her wasn’t just the game—it was the feeling around it.
“Buffalo called me home.”
Returning to Buffalo didn’t feel like going backward—it felt like moving into exactly where she was meant to be.
That same sense of connection is what draws her to Buffalo Pro Soccer.
“Loyalty, patience, and hope—that’s what defines a Buffalo fan.”
For Caroline, art and soccer aren’t so different. Both invite people in. Both create space for connection. And both allow people to feel something—no expertise required.
“There’s something in both art and soccer for everyone—you don’t have to understand it to connect with it.”
You don’t have to understand it—you just have to experience it.
Buffalo Pro Soccer is ready to give this city something to experience, together.
All are welcome.
